Eastern Counties Branch Technical Talk

This free event is organised by our Eastern Counties Branch for our members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to join us.

Overview:-  EV sales will reach 44 million units per year by 2030. There is a recognised need to increase the number of battery packs manufactured.

Laser welding has emerged as the optimal welding technique for accelerating EV battery pack manufacture as it is 4-5 times faster than current welding processes. However, there are metallurgical challenges, such as joining multiple dissimilar materials of varying thicknesses.

Carrs Welding has been working on Innovate UK-funded projects to address the mentioned challenges. In this talk, Phil will present the latest findings and future work on the ultrasonic assisted laser welding for high volume assembly of automotive battery packs project.

Speaker:- Phil Carr (Director Carrs WeldingTech

Speaker Biography:-  Phil Carr is the director and owner of Carrs Welding Technologies, a company specialising in laser welding, TIG welding, laser marking & engraving, tooling repairs and laser cladding and offers precision laser welding services.

Over the past 2 decades, Phil has accumulated knowledge on laser welding and has gained holistic knowledge from product design, prototyping through to the production. Phil has a background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He is currently focused on R&D activities and also acts as the project manager for the Innovate UK funded Soni-Laser collaborative research project
