Materials Technical Group (TG3)

The Materials Technical Group meetings cover topics including metals; non-ferrous metals; advanced materials (e.g. intermetallic and composites); plastics and ceramics; mechanical properties in metallic and non-metallic joints; service behaviour of components joined by welding or other means; defect mechanisms and weldability testing; metallurgical aspects of filler materials; metallurgy of welding tube and pipe; health and safety; computer software and tools; national and international standards; quality control and IIW activities related to metallurgy.

Meet the TG3 Chair

Peter Boothby BSc PhD CEng FWeldI MIMMM EWE/IWE

Peter is a Metallurgist and Welding Engineer with over 40 years of experience primarily gained in the UK gas industry with particular emphasis on the specification, selection, approval and application of pipeline materials, suppliers and welding technology. His early career was spent working in Research and Development and he also played a key role in the implementation of L555MB (X80) grade material in the UK gas pipeline transmission system in the early 2000s.

He has sat on several TWI and BSI committees and has also acted as an expert witness. He has authored over twenty five published papers and has given numerous technical presentations and training courses in materials and welding technology. He was Business Area Leader and Principal Consultant in the Materials and Welding group at Rosen UK prior to his retirement in 2022.
