    London Branch Technical Talk

    This is a London and Kent Branch event organised and run by our London  Branch. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

    Overview:-Join us for a powerful session uncovering the key findings of the HSE report RR1215, which reveals critical failures in welding practices across multiple industries.     Speaker Biography:- Keith Birkitt is a leading expert in materials failure investigations, bringing decades of hands-on experience to the field. With a BSc in Metallurgy and an MSc in Welding Technology, he has spent over 40 years tackling complex engineering challenges. His career includes 13 years as a production welding engineer, 5 years with an engineering insurance company, and 22 years as a forensic scientist specializing in failure analysis and expert witness testimony. Keith has played a key role in national safety alerts and has authored peer-reviewed papers on industrial plant and equipment failures. His deep expertise and investigative insights make him a highly respected authority in the industry.

        This is a Sheffield Branch event organised and run by our Sheffield Branch for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.


        Programme:

        5.30pm Light buffet will be available. 

        6.00pm CTL Seal presentation will include a company profile covering welding capabilities and qualifications followed by a presentation on the

        72010 Hengist – a Steam Locomotive for the 21st Century Project 

        A project to build a new steam locomotive using modern manufacturing methods in today’s engineering environment, highlighting the progress to date.  

        7.00pm Works tour concluding at the Hengist Locomotive in the Assembly Shop.

        8:00pm Finish 

        Note that this is an in-person event only. Registration is essential as numbers are strictly limited to 25 people.

        CTL Seal will provide necessary PPE, except for footwear. If possible, visitors should bring their own safety shoes. Stout walking shoes are acceptable provided visitors keep to the walkways. Otherwise, safety shoes must be worn.

        Technical Group Event

        JOIN OUR METALLIC MATERIALS TECHNICAL GROUP (TG3) EVENT

        Titanium has a very specific role to play in manufacturing, with particular strength to weight benefits, but is a complex material to process for a number of reasons.

        Presentations will cover the basics of titanium, the specific requirements in how to handle and weld it to achieve a good quality, and also more niche joining/processing methods.

        Who should attend?

        Welders, welding engineers, metallurgists, quality engineers in aerospace, automotive, defence, engineering and fabrication, space.

        Registration will close on 21 April.

        Once you are through security, please turn right at the roundabout and follow the road until the next roundabout just past the Nuffield Gym and turn left. Visitor car parking is in front of the building with the aeroplane outside. If that car park is full, you can use the staff car park which is on your right as you face TWI.

        Quality Control for Titanium Welding

        David has worked in Welding Engineering for over 30 years. In that time, he has gained wide experience in developing arc welding processes for a range of material types, including applications that required the development of welding parameters for titanium alloys. 


        Luke Keane

        Weld Purging for Zero Colour Welds

        Luke has been with the company for the last 12 years and in that time progressed to become a company Director, looking after the 45 exclusive world-wide distributors.

        Over the last 12 years Luke has been heavily involved in product development, helping to design bespoke solutions and take HFT innovation to the next level. More recently, he has been working very closely with a nuclear client involved with HPC and designed a unique blocking and purging system for the welding of duplex sump boxes.

        This webinar will be looking at why we need Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT), concentrating mainly on the heat treatment of carbon manganese and low/medium alloy steels. We will be looking at the benefits of PWHT, how these benefits are achieved, heat treatment methods and control, relevant specifications and recommended PWHT temperatures for a range of alloys.

        MEET THE SPEAKER:

        EUR ING Gene Mathers CEng, MSc, Dip IIM, FWeldI, EWE, IWE

        Consultant 

        Gene has over 40 years industrial experience working in pipeline, power generation, heavy engineering, nuclear and the pressure vessel fabrication industries. He worked for NEI-International Combustion Ltd. as the company’s Welding and Metallurgy Manager and latterly Quality Manager for some 10 years before joining TWI Ltd in 1991 as Manager, School of Welding Technology, where he controlled and administered courses ranging from hands on skills training to classroom based welding engineering courses for postgraduate engineers.

        He then moved into the role of Principal Consultant in the Manufacturing Services Group before taking retirement in 2007. Since then he has provided a welding engineering consultancy service as a private consultant.

        Overview:-  In this presentation, the Fraunhofer Institute's Scientific Team Leader for bonding technologies, Sascha Stribrick, will discuss two examples of joining technolgy that have been the subject of resent work at the Fraunhofer IPA.

        Speaker:- Sascha Stribrick (Scientific Team Leader, Fraunhofer Institute) 

        Speaker Biography:- Since 2020, Sascha Stribrick has worked in bonding technologies at the Fraunhofer Institute of manufacturing engineering and automation in Struttgart, Germany. After his studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Struttgart, he started his research into the friction stir welding of polymers and adhesively bonded cutting tools for different materials. He completed the advanced education to become a European Adhesive Engineer in 2023 to deepen his knowldege of bonding technologies. Since July 2024 he is the Scientific Team Leader for bonding technologies.
